THE FALCONER
October 2005
Summer Review
What a wonderful summer! Falcon had a
record number of campers and was absolutely full the first six weeks. It is
great to see so many campers return and still have some room for new faces from
such a variety of different places. The
weather cooperated beautifully this year with one notable exception of an area
power outage. We were very pleased with how campers and staff responded to
several days without electricity. Senehawk games were outstanding, especially
during second session and in the spirit of our “friendly competition”. A look
on the back page gives tribute to our High Flyers but a special note of
accomplishment should go to Dan Strassfeld for receiving his Falconer award in
both sailing and woodslore in the same summer. We may need to create new
athletic awards for John, Annabelle and Iris Rayburn as they keep moving to
higher levels. Our new addition to the dining hall gave everyone a little more
space to eat in comfort, made camp store easier and allowed the health center to
function much smoother. Woodslore was an excellent activity as Jenn Mizen
continues to add interesting programs. Sam Weinberg reports more campers
received archery awards than ever before, with Ben Cook and Sam Davis both
earning their American Archer. The waterfront was strong in every aspect and
the list goes on and on. It’s been an excellent summer all the way around.
CIT’S
Our Counselor in
Training program is an integral part of becoming a Falcon staff member. Each
year we accept a limited number of young people whom we believe have the
potential to make an outstanding Falcon counselor. Invitations to eligible
campers will be mailed by the end of October.

Early Registration 2006 Newsflash
All of you should
receive early registration information with this newsletter. As is our pattern,
2005 camp families will have a window of opportunity to register before anyone
else. Please take advantage of this to
make sure you get registered in the sessions of your choice. You will be
able to go to the website and get this information also. Camp will open on June
18th in 2006 so mark your calendars.
Fall/Winter Work
There are always
many projects this time of year as we improve the facility and get things closed
for winter. Girls can expect to see wooden bunk beds in all cabins next summer,
the pavilion is being reorganized to better suit our crafts and drama programs,
the kitchen will be revamped with a walk-in freezer, and lots of little “fix
its” everywhere around camp. We have a plan awaiting Conservation District
approval to improve the far side of our boat harbor. We’ve made some very cool
new benches to put throughout camp. Much of our efforts this fall have been at
the farm. We’ve replanted two of our three horse pastures and built a new fence
line for better field management. Most important is the remaking of our road to
the lake so we can best use our woods for overnights, horse
and hiking trails. It has been years since we have been able to drive a tractor
through this part of our property. We have some interesting long term plans at
the farm which we hope to announce in the next newsletter. On the
program/office end of things, we are getting ready to launch a bigger and
better website with lots of help from Todd Lennig.

Senior Girls Relax on an overnight
From The Director
Each summer we
always receive some nice notes and letters from camp families. This year we
have received more than usual. I believe we run a great camp and we certainly
work hard at it, but it is good to hear that belief reinforced by our camper
families. With their permission, we will be reprinting some of them on our
website.
As we head into a
new season for 2006, we always spend time analyzing what worked well, what we
could do differently, what can we do that is new, how can we be better. It is
important for us to hear from campers and parents. Please feel free to call or
email anytime you would like to share your thoughts and ideas with us.
Have a good school
year!
