Woodslore, Horseback Riding and Crafts

Falcon Camp is a place designed to offer plenty of opportunities for adventure and exploration to young people looking for new friends, new hobbies, or just a fun new way to spend the summer.

Woodslore will help you connect with nature. Horseback riding will help you connect with animals. Crafts will help you connect with your inner creative self. Through all these activities, you get to find YOU a little bit better while maybe making a few new friends along the way.

Woodslore

Woodslore explores the study of nature, survival skills, and more. In this activity, we learn firebuilding, lashing, shelter building, orienteering, plant and tree identification, knife skills, and outdoor cooking. Campers go on hikes through our acres of woods, all the while building their skills to earn awards and feel comfortable in nature.

Horseback Riding and Horsemanship

horseback riding

Campers are introduced to our herd of around 20 horses in a variety of ways. During their Riding periods, they alternate spending days in the saddle and on the ground. While riding, campers learn how to walk, stop, steer, trot, post, canter, and even jump, depending on their riding level.

On days spent on the ground (called Horsemanship), campers learn about types of horses, parts of a saddle, how to care for horses, and so on. Our Barn Director has worked in the horse industry for over 30 years, and her expertise shows in our program. She can teach someone who has never been near a horse, or someone who has been riding for 10 years.

Campers also have the opportunity to help with the horses before breakfast. If they want to get up and make their way to stables by 7:15, they can help bring in the horses from the corral, groom them, and feed them breakfast. It’s a great way to see what a little of the responsibility behind horse ownership is really like! It’s also a great way to spend more time with horses, for those campers who just can’t get enough. Additionally, there is an award system for campers who go to horse care consistently.

Crafts

While up in the pavilion, campers can work on a variety of crafts under the guiding eye of our expert counselors. Each day, our staff will plan a main craft to teach to campers, covering a variety of media and textiles. These include wood, soap, candles, fabrics, paint, pencils, markers, nature, yarn, and more. A perennial favorite craft is tie-dye, when campers can bring any white item of clothing or buy a white Falcon t-shirt and dye it in a variety of patterns.
