What Overnight Camp Offers That Day Camp Doesn’t

3 Benefits Overnight Summer Camp Offers That Day Camp Never Will

Overnight summer camp offers a unique and special experience that can stay with your child for a lifetime. The lasting effects that this time away from home can have on your child are simply invaluable.

This period in your child’s life is when they’re growing and learning information that will ultimately shape their social skills and cognitive development. At sleepaway camp, your child will have the chance to hone these skills and learn new ones. While there are certainly perks to day camps, they’re far outweighed by the life-changing and developmental benefits of a premier overnight summer camp like Falcon Camp.

1. A Chance To Disconnect

Most overnight summer camps don’t allow cell phones, electronic devices, iPods, iPads or other electronic devices. While you most likely will get push back from your child or teen, this rule ultimately allows your camper to slow down and really appreciate their surroundings and experiences.

Day camps may ban electronics and cellphones, but your child will be right back on them every evening when they’re back at home. An overnight camp allows them to truly step back and away from technology. This gives them a chance to try new activities or pick up old hobbies they forgot about or have gotten away from.

At Falcon Camp, for example, screen time can be replaced with activities like swimming, tennis, archery, sailing, fishing, drama, crafts, horseback riding and so much more.

2. The Circumstances To Make Close New Friends

While it can be difficult and daunting for your child to go to a new, unfamiliar place where they don’t know anyone, most overnight camps make it easy and fun for campers to find and make friends fast. The experience of staying overnight and adapting together can also help form strong bonds.

A resident camp friendship may only last a summer, or it may last a lifetime. (At Falcon Camp, we find it’s often the latter.) Either way, overnight camp allows children and teens the opportunity to spread their wings a little and branch out from their regular circle of friends. Your child will get a chance to connect with other people in a truly meaningful and positive way.

3. The Time To Gain Independence

Overnight summer camp allows children to really gain some independence while they’re away from Mom and Dad. It can be a great opportunity for children do learn how to do things on their own without the constant reminder from adults. Campers will have to do things like make their beds or brush their teeth all on their own. And you may just find that when your child or teen returns home, they’re more willing to tackle daily chores or responsibilities without you having to constantly remind them.

Overnight camps can also help your child learn how to make choices. During their time at camp, they’ll get to decide what they want to eat, which sports they want to participate in and even which bunk they want to sleep in. Camp counselors don’t dictate as many details of the day as parents sometimes do. Because of this, your child will be responsible for making many choices all on their own.

Of course, independence should never mean a lack of supervision. You’ll want to choose an overnight camp with a high staff/camper ratio. For example, Falcon Camp has at least one staffer for every four campers ages nine and up, and one counselor for every two campers nine and under.
