FALCON CAMP JOB DESCRIPTIONS

GENERAL QUALIFICATIONS:

Candidates for staff positions have to enjoy working with children. Senior Staff Counselors must be eighteen years or older, preference is given to those that have had some experience in a resident camp, either as a leader or a camper. Certification such as Lifeguard Training; Community First Aid And CPR; Outdoor leadership; Horseback Riding Instructor (Certification by HSA or equivalent); and other related areas are desirable. Candidates must be able to work the entire summer camp season, which includes one week of staff training.

CABIN COUNSELOR:

The most important job at any summer camp. All staff will be a cabin counselor. Cabin counselors should be skilled in one or more of the camp program areas and should feel comfortable in leading songs, directing campfire programs, and leading games. Responsibilities include direct leadership of five to eight boys or girls, planning in the coordination of events and instruction of campers in a variety of skill areas.

UNIT LEADER:

Responsible for the campers, staff and programming with in the Unit. Supervises and assists counselors in the Unit. Maintains an on-going communication with all other staff about camper situations. Is responsible for scheduling evening activities, overnight menus and night and rest hour duty chart. Suggested age is 20 with sleepaway camp experience

NATURE INSTRUCTOR:

Candidates must have knowledge of local flora and fauna, astronomy, weather, “low impact” outdoor living skills and orienteering. Responsibilities include planning and implementing a hands-on nature program, with emphasis on instilling a reverence for all life and an understanding of basic ecological concepts. Specific responsibilities include conducting daily nature activities for small groups of 7 to 16 year olds. Must have a strong interest and background in environmental education or related fields.

RIDING DIRECTOR:

Opens and closes down the Stables, responsible for the development of administration of the stables, safety and ongoing stable maintenance. Trains and supervises the Stable Staff in the daily teaching of riding, grooming, tacking and other equestrian activities. Maintains an on-going communication with the Program Director.

WATERFRONT DIRECTOR:

Opens and closes down the waterfront area; responsible for the development of and administration of the waterfront safety and ongoing waterfront maintenance. Trains and supervises the Waterfront Staff in the daily teaching of swimming, sailing and canoeing lessons, safety and other aquatic activities. Maintains an on-going communication with the Program Director. 21 years of age, current W.S.I. Certification, Lifeguard Training, Community First Aid & CPR or the equivalent.

CRAFTS MANAGER:

Organizes and teaches camper’s craft classes according to the guidelines of the Program Director. Opens and closes the Craft Shop continually maintains an inventory on equipment and supplies, and keeps the Craft Shop clean. Teaching experience and knowledge of hand crafts.

ATHLETICS:

Teach basic skills to campers to a variety of games, soccer, basketball, kick-the-can, new games, etc. Emphasis is on skills rather than competition.

BOATING INSTRUCTORS:

(Sailing & Canoeing) Teaches in canoeing and sailing. Assist with guarding and teaching as certifications allow. Maintains routine repairs and cleaning of boats.
Small craft certification or experience is required.

RIDING STAFF:

Necessary qualification for each of these positions includes proven riding ability and experience working with children and horses. Preferred candidates will possess certification from a recognized organization such as CHA (The Association for Horsemanship Safety and Education). Responsibilities include assisting the Riding Director in care of horse herd, saddling and grooming, horsemanship and riding instructions, leading trail rides and stable cleanup. Duties also include working with and participation in special events.

RIFLERY INSTRUCTOR:

Documented training and experience in riflery. Teaches proper technique for firing, care of rifle, and sightings. Teaches riflery classes to all campers. Maintains high standards according to Falcon Camp.

TENNIS INSTRUCTOR:

Teach basic to advanced skills to campers. Emphasis is on skills rather than competition.

WATERFRONT STAFF:

Instruct and guard at the waterfront. Assist in the daily maintenance of these areas. Current Lifeguard Training, Community First Aid and CPR required.

ALL CAMP POSITIONS REQUIRE PEOPLE INTERESTED IN WORKING WITH CHILDREN, GOOD PHYSICAL HEALTH, AND THE ABILITY TO NEGOTIATE ACROSS A NATURAL TERRAIN OF HILLS, FIELDS, SWAMPS, STEPS, AND RAVINES.
